Today was automatically an amazing day because today happened to be Thanksgiving lunch at the school so I had a belly full of mashed potatoes, turkey, stuffing, and PIE. So can't really have a bad day with that :) Ceramics 1 was introduced to their final project of the semester: a slab constructed, functional object with some form of press mold created by the student. Today they brainstormed ideas and continued to glaze previous work. I started grading their coil constructed vessels for Ms. O and worked on including more personalized feedback since I didn't do so well when I was grading Intro to 3D work last week. I think I did a much better job and I was really impressed with all of their work! Here's some examples!

During prep Ms. O allowed me to read an email exchange with a parent who was concerned about her child receiving an F in IB Art. I guess IB is some alternative to AP, but IB doesn't require actual skill or technical ability in art, it's more of an investigative, response type of art. More academic in a sense. Anyway, this girl is academic honors, super accomplished, Type A, student, but she is totally blowing off IB Art. Ms. O has repeatedly found her working on other school work during class time, completing 1 month long projects in 1 day or just not even turning in work. So the parent was very polite in the email, but it was totally obvious that they were playing this sob story of a academically burdened child who strives for excellence in everything. Ms. O had a meeting one on one with the student during 5th period and they discussed concerns and created an action plan for the rest of the semester. She handled the whole situation very well.

Intro to 3D classes continued to work on their paper project. A lot of them are really struggling to understand the layering process so at the beginning of class I took the opportunity to announce what steps they should take to start their project so everyone was on the same page since a lot of the prior classes had similar classes.

Last note, there is a student who transferred to Fishers for the art program and he is just taking off. I don't even think the teachers assigned him anything, he is just constantly making these crazy amazing sculptures. He pumps one out every day basically. This is one of the projects he has been working on that's just stupid awesome: A giant dragon's head.
