Today was a blur! I went to the HSE Administration building in the morning for an interview to become a substitute teacher for HSE! It went very well. I explained CoT and that my mentor is at Fishers and I would love to sub for her whenever I'm available and I got the job on the spot. So now I am going to sub for Ms. O next Thursday and Friday! I'm super excited! After my interview I went over to Fishers. Today was the final day of their spirit week so they had "a day without bells" where teachers from different departments paired up and created a cross curricular lesson plan aimed towards developing life skills that aren't always explicitly taught in school. The students were able to create a schedule for the day and go to whatever classes they wanted and then the day culminated in a pep rally to kick off Fishers' Dance Marathon for Riley's. Ms. O started the dance marathon at Fishers because she loved participating in IU's dance marathon when she was a college student! I'm going to ask more about what the process was for starting a huge event like this in a high school when it's less hectic for her. Back to the beginning of the day: Ms. O did not participate in the day with out bells, instead she hosted poster making sessions for the dance marathon for students to come down and help out. The kids were great and they made amazing posters for recognizing the sponsors of the event, the children they were dancing for at Riley's, and just fun decorations fro the gym!

Ms. O definitely had a lot on her hands so I graded tests for her and loaded the kiln for her. I have never loaded a kiln before so it was good to learn how and learn how to start the kiln. The rest of the day went by in a flash and we headed to the gym for the pep rally. Fishers is literally high school musical. When you picture the American high school, Fishers epitomizes it. I have never seen so many students in one room. Everyone's spirits were high, there were great performances and skits, a moving speaker for Riley's, and they raised $1,200 during a miracle minute where they passed the buckets around the student body to raise as much money to go towards Riley's Dance Marathon in one minute. The staff and administration had such great sense of humor during student skits and it was just a really fun time! I love the school spirit and community at Fishers!

Last thing I wanted to talk about was the ceramics project Ms. Osborne had her students do so they could be displayed and sold at the dance marathon to raise money for Riley's. She had them create plates inspired by cells they observed through digital microscopes in the science department. They turned out so cool and I think this is a great cross curricular and community project! An awesome idea that got a lot of bang for its buck.

It was a great day and it really makes me proud to work with Fishers HS! And I'm excited to substitute next week!
