Today in Ceramics 1 I passed back their tests (the one's that they took the wrong version of) and went through the answers and which questions I omitted from the final score. As I mentioned before, a lot of them missed a point or two in the written response to the open ended question at the end of the test. I took the points off and then wrote a note saying if they answered a., b., and c. on a separate piece of paper I would give back points. Only two students took advantage of this. I think it was because it was only a point or two and not worth it in their eyes to try and master the concept. So next time I think I will give a 0 if they don't answer the question fully so then they are kind of forced to rewrite and turn it in for points.

I helped grade projects most of the day. I graded AP free choice projects and Intro to 3D Totem Pole projects. For the AP free choice I was able to make personalized comments at the bottom of the rubric, but I found when I was grading the totem poles I kept leaning on the same sentences or phrases for every single feedback I gave. I think it was hard for me to give individualized feedback for this project because 1. this is their first taste of clay so even if the projects are "bad" they get full credit if they completed it and used full class time to work on it 2. because they all began to blend together. There were 60 totem poles and a lot looked similar in some senses. 3. because I don't know them individually as well as I know the AP students. I had to work hard to make sure I gave feedback specific to each student on the totem pole project, but I think some of that will be easier when I work with them on a consistent basis and can put a face to the project I'm grading.

During 6th period, Ms. O had started a demo and two girls did not come to the table to watch her. I walked over because one of the girls always needs prompting to do what is asked, but when I got over there, I realized she was consoling a teary eyed girl next to her. I told her to go watch the demo and asked the girl who was crying if she wanted to go to the bathroom and take a minute to herself which she accepted. I waited out in the hall until she came out and told her that I wasn't going to pry but if there was anything I could do to help her right then. She said no. I asked if she would like to go to a different room to calm down or stay out in the hall and she said yes. I told her I would just need to ask Ms. O if there was someplace she could go. I went back into the class and pulled Ms. O to update her on the situation. She said she would talk to her. So we both went back out and Ms. O called out the girl that was consoling her as well. The girl was still teary when we came back out and Ms. O asked what was wrong. She said she didn't want to talk about it. Ms. O asked if her friend knew what was going on. She said yes. Ms. O asked if she'd let her friend tell us what was happening and the girl said yes. The friend then went on to explain that a boy in her class before this period consistently bullies her telling her she's ugly, no on likes her, and then today he told her to kill herself. Ms. O said, "okay we have three options right now. You can go down to the counselor's with your friend and notify them of what happened. I can go down to the counselor's with you. Or I can send an email. But this has to be brought attention to because that is not an okay thing for anyone to say to anybody. You know that he said that because he is discontent with his own said, pathetic life right? It has nothing to do with the amazing, lovable person that you are." So she decided to go down to the counselors with her friend. I was just shocked that anyone would ever say that to someone's face. I asked if he had texted it to her (so she had proof) but she said he said it out loud. That's just astounding to me. I'm glad Ms. O managed to get that out of her because I wasn't going to pry just thinking it was normal friend or boy issues, not something serious like that.

Other than that, it was a great day at Fishers as usual. Here are some of the totem pole projects!
